“We were allowed to test the kibble and when we didn’t like it 100%, we could change the flavour for free.”
If your dog has no appetite, these are the 6 main causes:
1. Your dog is sick. So pay close attention to other symptoms such as lethargy, trembling, vomiting and diarrhoea.
2. Your dog has a dental problem. That causes pain in his mouth, and of course he is not eager to eat.
3. Your dog is picky. Or yes, just a real foodie who enjoys only the best aromas and flavours.
4. Your dog needs to get used to a new environment. Have you just moved or is your dog travelling with you? Nice, but dogs need time to get used to change. So eating less or not eating could be down to your dog being uncomfortable.
5. Your dog does not feel safe. Does your dog live with an aggressive pet that comes to plague him every time he tries to eat? Or is he regularly disturbed during his meals? If so, your dog may associate meal time with a negative experience and refuse to eat.
6. Your dog moves less. For example, because he is already a year older. If your dog is not expending energy, his tummy will feel full for longer. And logically, he will have less appetite.
Reasons why your dog is picky:
1. He just doesn’t like his kibble. Just as you might prefer pasta carbonara to lasagne, your dog is not an absolute fan of a particular brand or recipe.
2. He gets sick from his food. For example, because he is allergic to an ingredient. Does he vomit regularly, or has diarrhoea or itching? Then it could be because of his diet and it is time for a change.
3. Your dog is tired of the taste. Eating the same food every day may be good for your dog’s intestinal flora, but sometimes he just has enough. Switching can be done, but do it gradually!
4. Your dog gets too many snacks or table scraps. These are of course super tasty – and certainly not forbidden – but can reduce your dog’s appetite.
Get your dog back wild about his bowl of kibble with these 3 tips:
1. Change dog food. A different flavour can do wonders for your dog’s appetite. Do make sure to allow a 7-day transition period so that his gut flora remains balanced.
2. Put a tasty topping on his kibble. A tip: dogs love salmon oil. And packed with omega 3 and 6 so a real superfood!
3. Make mealtime fun and challenging! Try pouring your dog’s kibble into a food ball or hiding it in a sniffing mat. Your dog will find this super exciting and will regain pleasure in eating.
